Thursday October 12, 10:30 to 11:30
The Presidents Get Connected – A Smithsonian Case Study with:
Alex Cooper of the Smithsonian Institute, Ken Kane of Lighting Services Inc., and Ron Steen, Xicato

The deluge of wireless, connected, IoT ready devices are here – but there are still question marks, especially how designers can actually deploy them and the determination of any real benefit. This presentation will describe a live case study in the implementation of connected lighting technologies at one of the most prestigious institutions in the USA. This presentation will describe a challenging refurbishment at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Why were color change and fixed white schemes selected for this space? How were application program interfaces (APIs) utilized to merge various systems and protocols across the space? Through this fascinating case study, designers can consider how to connect their own projects.

Saturday October 13, 2:50pm - 3:50pm
Lovers of Light – A Point/Counterpoint Game Show with Ron Steen, Moderator.
Natalia Lesniak, Lumen Architecture, Mariel Taviana Acevedo, Solus, Tony Esposito, Angelica Santana, Associate IALD, C.M. Kling & Associates, Jana Owens, Fluxwerx Illumination Inc., Dave Young, ETC, and Jim Toole, Creative Systems Lighting – Scorekeeper

In this session, YOU are part of the action. Lovers of Light is a lighthearted, interactive panel discussion with serious overtones executed in a game show format. A panelist will take a side (point or counterpoint) of an industry topic in a timed debate followed by the other panelists providing a view. Then it’s your turn! The audience will kick around the pros and cons of the topic for 5 minutes then an applause-o-meter will be used to determine the winning side – yes, there are winners and losers in Lovers of Light!

The topics are:

• TM-30 – It has been out for almost two years and, while most agree it is a superior metric to CRI, almost no one is using it in specifications. Point: CRI is good enough. Counterpoint: TM-30 is a must Tunable White and Color Tuning - Light and Health is a hot topic.

• RGBAW, 2 channel vs 5, on the Locus or not... – Seems everyone is talking but few are buying – first thing to get value engineered. Point: Color Change is a must – we have the technology so use it. Counterpoint: Fixed white points are fine. “You want color change? Use a window!”

• Control and the IoT – We all admit control and IoT is the next Wild West. Is lighting the leader to collect and deliver data spawning brand new lighting markets and business models? True or False? Hype or the Future? Point: This is all a bunch of bunk. Counterpoint: The future is now and we must emerge into the next phase of digital lighting.

But wait there’s more – get ready for five surprise topics in the speed round!
